This year, Christmas won’t be such a silent night as Entertaining Artist and Lawrence Welk Accordionist Tim Padilla has all sorts of creatures stirring with the release of his latest album Spirit Of Christmas. This 10-track instrumental album features the talents of master musicians George Mason, Rob McKendrick, Joel Johanson, Samuel Lett, Kirsten Weingartner, Tom Potjunas, and Lou Colbe. Produced by Tim Padilla, Rob McKendrick, and Lou Colbe in association with Zimbadu Productions, Spirit Of Christmas is now in stores and available online courtesy of Dus-T-Hill Studios.
“Everyone celebrates Christmas in a different way,” says Padilla, “And I want the music featured on this album to be enjoyed by all cultures... The message of Christmas should be about sharing love with one another, and I believe that the musical arrangements on this album have an enduring quality to them that will be listened to and enjoyed for many years to come.”
Deemed as one of the hottest accordionists in America, Padilla is now a rising star in the music world. A native of southern California, Padilla (28) has repeatedly been awarded top honors at various music competitions and contests and has performed with an impressive array of celebrities, including Myron Floren, the Lennon Sisters, Slash of Guns 'n' Roses, and the classic rock band Chicago.
According to Padilla, creating a quality and hip sound for the accordion is always a challenge; however, one he enjoys greatly. “Working with the unbelievable talent featured on this recording made it a easy to showcase the accordion’s diversity with a variety of musical styles! World-renowned violinist George Mason created some of the most brilliant ideas for string arrangements, which made it very easy to blend the accordion and strings together on these tracks with smooth and elegant phrasing, and rich, beautiful melodic harmonies.
Spirit Of Christmas was arranged, recorded, mixed and mastered in just 3 weeks and features traditional favorites such as Jingle Bells, Deck the Halls, What Child Is This, Auld Lang Syne, but according to Padilla the highlights on this album are definitely the “live” jazz version of We Three Kings and the Irish-rock version of I Saw 3 Ships.
Mason, McKendrick, Colbe, and Padilla give a radiant, fresh new sound to the song We Three Kings. “It’s priceless to hear the sound of real musicians creating something live and in the moment! We just sat down and enjoyed a little jam session as we played through this jazzy arrangement of this classic holiday favorite. What I love the most about this track is the unique and simple orchestration of just an accordion, guitar, drums and upright bass.”
One of the most innovative and experimental tracks on Spirit Of Christmas is the tune I Saw 3 Ships. “When I originally worked out the arrangement for this tune with Rob McKendrick, I wrote it specifically with a Celtic-rock feel,” shares Padilla. “I want people to enjoy the accordion in all genres of music and bring a modern edge to an instrument that has taken much flack for its awkward design.” And Padilla has done just that with his Jimi Hendrix style accordion solo.
Padilla’s innate versatility, and innovative choice for instrumentation truly stands out on Spirit Of Christmas.
Tim has also appeared several times on the popular Mark & Brian radio program (West Coast) and in a variety of national television commercials and programs, such as NBC's "Saved by the Bell" and the annual Jerry Lewis Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy.
Currently Tim stars as a lead singer, dancer, comedian and musician in the Touring LIVE Welk Show, as well as producing his very own two-hour show set to open in Branson, MO Spring 2007.
